Connecting Welsh textile and heritage
The project
Welcome to our museum project, where we aim to create a vibrant and inclusive museum space housed within Newtown’s Train Station, Powys, Wales. Newtown is the birthplace of virtual shopping. It was from here in 1861 that the world's first mail-order empire changed global shopping habits. Pryce-Jones a local Newtown draper pioneered the world’s first mail order catalogue business by utilising the new rail networks, train and postal services and it was from Newtown Train Station that these first mail order textiles departed to be distributed around the world. Having the Museum in Newtown train station will bring local context to the story bringing it full circle to how we shop today on-line (for better or worse!) and back to its roots in Newtown. It will act as a space for visitors to engage with the rich archives of Welsh art, culture, stories and heritage. By collaborating with local stories and museums such as the Newtown Textile Museum and heritage projects our ultimate aim is to digitally connect Welsh art archives with institutions across the UK and globally. Join us in celebrating and exploring the diverse tapestry of Welsh culture!
